An Evening of Drama 2023

Amidst new possibilities in the post-pandemic era, the College Chinese Society held its annual production, An Evening of Drama (Huangcheng), at the High School Drama Centre on 12 and 13 May 2023.

The theme of our production this year is “Dawn” (杲), which symbolises new beginnings. Like the rising sun, which illuminates the world with its radiance, we hope that we too can rise above our challenges, embrace the limitless potential within ourselves and move towards a brighter future. This theme is interwoven into our plays as they explore human connections that transcend all barriers, while depicting stories of hope, warmth and strength.

During the performance, our plays brought our audience on an emotional rollercoaster – from tear-jerking moments to comedy gold, from the infectious laughter of three script-writers to the deafening roar of a train engine, from the familial warmth of an unlikely friendship to the fiery passion of a young rock band… Huangcheng is definitely an evening for all to remember!

Beyond these stories, this production also unfolded the unique and heart-warming experiences of every member off-stage. Without the dedication, teamwork and hard work of our 145 crew members across 12 departments, such a production would not have been possible. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to each and every participant who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes, as well as our teachers and peers who stood by us throughout this journey.

Lastly, we would like to give a special shout-out to the audience. Thank you for the opportunity to perform for three full houses across two days. Your unwavering support and heartfelt enthusiasm will motivate us to strive for greater heights. See you again at next year’s An Evening of Drama!

如日之杲，如月之晕 ——《黄城夜韵》2023

5月12日至13日，我校高中部一年一度的中文戏剧大型演出《黄城夜韵》在校内的戏剧中心进行公演，三场演出场场满座，共吸引了约1100名观众。今年的主题是“杲”，意即明亮的样子，象征着为人间带来光明、温暖与希望。三部戏剧风格各异，但都从不同的角度诠释着“杲”这一主题，启发观众去深思自己遇到困难时，应如何重拾对生活的信念，重新去感受生命的意义。

本次演出共有两场各约30分钟的独幕剧与一场大戏。第一部独幕戏《阿嬷》将三代人的疏离感巧妙地通过一场诈骗案淋漓尽致地展现出来，不禁让观众感动落泪，反省自己是否也已在忙忙碌碌中遗忘了那位藏在记忆斑驳处的亲人。

第二场戏《一个XX的尴尬逆袭》的风格截然不同，它以“戏中戏”的奇特构思，讲述了三位编导如何帮助一个一无所长的学生“逆袭”成为学霸的离奇过程。紧凑的剧情中穿插了许多荒诞而又幽默的笑点，令在场的观众捧腹不已。

作为本年度的压轴大戏《青春放歌》，更是万众期待，激荡人心。故事讲述一支独立乐队在追梦的过程中即便身处逆境却依然奋发向上，用青春与激情抒唱了对诗与远方的礼赞与渴望。这场大戏交织着多重复杂的矛盾与冲突，演员的精湛演技更是让主角之间的情感纠纷扣人心弦，引人入胜。

自去年底开始，公演的筹备工作就已如火如荼地展开。12个小组，包括行政、导督、演员、司仪、道具、化妆、服装、宣传、票务、摄影、灯光及音效，每组各司其职，不舍昼夜，全情投入。今年初开学后黄城人更是在忙碌的课业之余，抽空完成各组所负责的任务，甚至牺牲假期及周末返校排练，这就是“黄城精神”吧？我们因它而挥汗如雨，因它而泪洒舞台，也因它而成为城里永不离席的守梦人……
